Fire Update. 6/22/2019 at 11 am: Fire crews will begin to prep road 567C along the fence line. The goal of this is to keep the fire from continuing east, and hold it on Forest Service land.

To increase efficiency, with Divisions A and Z, three additional divisions were created. They are being staffed as resources arrive. Division A will scout and assess structures and line construction opportunities for east spread. Division Z will continue scouting for indirect line construction opportunities and hold the fire south of Highway 246. Division L will prep on Highway 246 to hold the fire. The west fire flank has increased in activity and progressed to Copeland Canyon. The plan for Division L will be to scout for opportunities at the Seven Cabins road. Air operations will continue, as long as the weather allows.

With the increase in fire activity and a visible plume, additional information will be circulated throughout Roswell and Capitan. Updated information can be found in chamber offices, post offices and city buildings.

Safety of firefighters and the public, continues to be of utmost importance.

Weather:  Weather will remain the same. Although somewhat cooler, it will still be critical fire weather.

Firefighting Resources: Resources are continuing to arrive. A Type II Incident Management Team will begin arriving today and will begin shadowing the Pecos Team to learn strategies and tactics that have been in place. They will transition with the Pecos Type III Team, Sunday, June 23.

Closures:  The Fire has not crossed Highway 246, but because of smoke impacts, it has been closed from Capitan to Roswell. Home owners will be allowed in, “case by case”.  With the upcoming July 4th holiday, the Smokey Bear Ranger District is issuing closures for the Capitan Mountain Wilderness and all perimeter fire trails. West Mountain will remain open for recreational use.  They remind visitors to be careful with their use of campfires in the area.
